Short Stories

Ursula Bloom's many short stories appeared in a variety of newspapers and magazines. She was at her most prolific in this regard during the 1930s and 1940s, although her short fiction continued to be published (particularly in the London Evening News) until the early 1970s. The mid-Twentieth Century was something of a golden age for short stories, and like many of her contemporaries she flourished within the healthy market and public taste there was back then for short fiction, selling her work to numerous periodicals. Crazy Quilt, a hardbound book collection of some of her stories, was published by Hutchinson in 1933, but the vast majority of Bloom's short fiction remains unreprinted. I have arranged below by publication source all the short stories I have been able to track down so far in newspapers, magazines and book anthologies. A number of these I unearthed while doing research at the British Library Newspaper Library in Colindale, North London. Please bear in mind that the titles listed here that appeared in Australian periodicals are for the most part syndicated reprints of stories previously published in the U.K. As I continue my bibliographic research I hope to ascertain the provenance of these stories in British periodicals. It's worth noting also that while consulting Australian publications that have been digitised on the Trove website, I also came across several serial stories (which typically ran for five consecutive issues of a periodical), feature articles and numerous poems by Bloom, in addition to the stories I have listed here.
